But Above All, Be Brave

So last week I wrote about getting rid of fear and the importance of shining light on those things that give us anxiety so that their power is removed. Ironically as I hit publish on the post about our daughter’s epic health scare a few years ago I felt a TON of anxiety and fear.

What is up, Lord? I thought.

And then it hit me…we are not called to be fearless. We are called to be brave. We are challenged throughout scripture to have courage; to take heart. To be steadfast, unwavering, resolute.

Then I remembered a few days later a conversation I had with my daughter when she started first grade. I was encouraging her to be bold, and to make friends, and to be confident. She had replied that she was scared, though, and I said,

“That’s what being brave is all about though, honey. It is doing something even though it makes you uncomfortable or makes you fearful.”

I had gone on to discuss with her why it is important for us to step out of our comfort zone and to move into all God has for us. And then I was totally convicted that I was sniveling over a little anxiety, worrying what people would think about what I had to say in the blog post. Pony up, I told myself – get your big girl panties on and deal with it, because it is good to be vulnerable and transparent and honest and raw and to let other people into the parts of you that even you yourself don’t really understand or have control of yet. But sometimes moving beyond the fears and doubts we have can be hard…really hard.

Have you heard of Toby Mac? I’m going to go ahead and assume yes – given that he is one of the most popular and well-known Christian artists of my generation. He has a song that just tears me up every time I hear it; he says,

“Call it a reason to retreat
I got some dreams that are bigger than me
I might be outmatched, outsized, the underdog in the fight of my life
Is it so crazy to believe

That You gave me the stars put them out of my reach
Called me to waters a little too deep
Oh, I’ve never been so aware of my need
You keep on making me see
It’s way beyond me
Yeah, it’s out of my league
It’s way beyond me

Anything that I got the strength to do
In over my head keeps me countin’ on You
I’m leaving the sweet spot, sure shot
Tradin’ it all for the plans You got
Is it so crazy to believe

You take me to the place where I know I need You
Straight to the depths that I can’t handle on my own
And the Lord I know, I know I need You
So take me to Your great …
Take me to Your great unknown”
– Beyond Me

Boom goes the dynamite – amiright? You want more from this lyrical genius, you say? How about this song:

“If You wanna steal my show, I’ll sit back and watch You go
If You got somethin’ to say, go on and take it away
Need You to steal my show, can’t wait to watch You go
So take it away

So now the crowd is hype, that you showed up tonight
Anticipatin’, cravin’ somethin’ more than smoke and lights
So I’ll step out the way, I’ll give You center stage
Give ’em what they came for …

When You arrive, we come to life
Our hearts collide, they’re beating in the same time
You’re comin’ through, all eyes on You
Our hearts collide, they’re beating in the same time, beating in the same time

No matter who we are, no matter what we do
Every day we can choose to say …

My life
My plans
My heart
It’s all Yours, God
Take it away
My dreams
My fears
My family
My career
Take it away
Take it away
It’s all Yours, God
Take it away
Take it away
It’s You I wanna live for”
-Steal My Show

Talk about some killer preaching right there, now. At the end of the day, and at the end of our lives, any act of bravery or kindness or selflessness we muster up the courage to perform ultimately reflects back on the Lord. In our times of weakness, He is made strong, and He is glorified.

When I choke down tears and chat with a friend about the heartwrenching despair I felt when my kids were sick, that vulnerability opens the door for us to grow closer, and for us to minister to one another.

When someone opens up to a close friend about her marriage struggles, God can burst in and help the healing begin.

When a young girl seeks help for an eating disoder, Satan is dethroned, bnecause he cannot reign in darkness when someone is brave enough to turn on the spotlight of truth and search for mercy, help, grace and acceptance.

When we are brave, Christ is glorified.

And He also gives us support and bolsters our spirits so that we can have the endurance needed to continue stepping out courageously in His name.

In Him,

Beautiful writing…yes! It’s time to open up & TALK our Testimony & tell others of how great God is! And we can only do that by humbling ourselves & bragging on our Abba Father… As you age, the more you will see yourself riding on His shoulders!!! God bless you & your beautiful family-Aunty Sam
